Empowering African and migrant communities in Queensland through unity, culture, and leadership.

Our Mission

Together, We Build a Stronger Community in QLD.

Cinyabuguma Association of Queensland is built on connection, culture, and empowerment. We unite Bashi migrant families across Queensland to celebrate our roots, support one another, and create pathways to success through education, leadership, and shared community values.

"We are of the Bashi in Brisbane Queensland and together through Cinyabuguma we maintain one another as it is our customs as we are Bhene'Mulhangane and we maintain our cultural values, morals or heritage wherever we are."

Cinyabuma President Chibalonza.

This meeting took place at Westfield Library.

About the Bashi People

The Bashi (also known as the Shi) are a Bantu-speaking people native to the South Kivu region of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Their ancestral homeland, known as Bushi, stretches from the highlands around Bukavu across Kabare, Walungu, and Kalehe territories.

Historically, the Bashi organized into a centralized kingdom under the leadership of the Mwami of Kabare, establishing one of the most structured traditional monarchies in eastern Congo. Their society developed strong political systems, rich oral traditions, and a deep respect for community and lineage.

During the Belgian colonial era, the Bashi kingdom was disrupted but not destroyed — its cultural and social institutions adapted and endured. Today, the Bashi remain one of the most influential ethnic groups in South Kivu, known for their resilience, agricultural expertise, and vibrant cultural heritage. Their language, Mashi, reflects close ties with neighboring peoples such as the Banyarwanda and Barundi, highlighting their deep historical influence across the Great Lakes region.
